On this Day of Awareness for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, & 2Spirit (MMIWG2S), Five Oaks Museum stands with Indigenous communities demanding justice, particularly Indigenous women and girls. We recognize that ongoing colonial systems of resource extraction, hetero-patriarchy, racism, and white supremacy perpetuate the MMIWG2S epidemic, and that the museum originates from this violence.
Nestucca, an artist from Grand Ronde whose work is featured in This IS Kalapuyan Land, created this painting titled Without A Trace to honor and bring awareness to MMIWG2S. In the painting, colorful vertical brushstrokes in red, green, yellow, blue, and white fill the background. Four Indigenous women wearing dresses are painted with thin outlines, as if emerging from or fading into the background. They stand in a row with their heads tilted downwards. They do not have hands or facial features.
