The Constellation | La Constelación

Thousands of young people participated in walkouts and other direct action in support of Latinx students at FGHS. Many more participated virtually, sending statements of support and solidarity on social media using the hashtag #StandUpFG.

Together, these youth created a “constellation of struggle” that drew attention to the racism experienced by students at FGHS, while at the same time, highlighted connections between those experiences and their own. In other words, students who participated in solidarity actions did so not only to express their support of students at FGHS, but also because they found common cause.

Miles de jóvenes participaron en las huelgas y otras acciones directas en apoyo del estudiantado Latinx en FGHS. Muchos otros participaron de manera virtual, enviando pronunciamientos de apoyo y solidaridad a través de las redes sociales usando la etiqueta #StandUpFG.  

Junta, esta juventud creó una “constelación de lucha” que llevó atención al racismo que experimentaban los estudiantes de FGHS. Las estudiantes que participaron en actos solidarios lo hicieron no sólo para expresar su apoyo por el estudiantado de FGHS, sino también porque encontraron una causa común.

The phrase “constellation of struggle” comes from the prodigious scholarship of Dr. Gaye Theresa Johnson, professor of African-American studies at UCLA. Dr. Johnson uses the phrases to describe the political landscape of civil rights activism in black and brown communities in 1940s Los Angeles. Aloha High School

Dozens of students at AHS walked out of school just a few minutes before noon. A Twitter user wrote, “Shout out to the kids at Aloha HS for joining the fight against hate and racism!! #standupFG.”

Beaverton High School

A news helicopter circled overhead as hundreds of BHS walked out in solidarity with #StandUpFG. The school’s principal addressed a group of students, telling them to “return to class and take advantage of the opportunities that you have at this school.”

Fort Vancouver High School

A small group of Latinx students from Fort Vancouver High School in SW Washington posed for a picture outside of the school while holding a LULAC banner. LULAC, which stands for League of United Latin American Citizens, is one of the oldest Latino civil rights organizations in the country. The photo, originally posted to Instagram, is captioned, “In solidarity with our hermanos y hermanas en Forest Grove HS.”

Glencoe High School

A group of students braved the nine mile walk from GHS to the Forest Grove School District offices to join their peers at the district rally. The students’ journey  was documented by @WashCoScanner, a local twitter account with over thirty-five thousand followers.

Un grupo de estudiantes enfrentó la caminata de nueve millas desde GHS a las oficinas del distrito escolar de Forest Grove para unirse a sus compañeros y compañeras en el rally del distrito. El viaje de las estudiantes quedó documentado en @WashCoScanner, una cuenta local de Twitter con más de 35.000 seguidores.

Hillsboro High School

Hundreds of youth participated in the walkout at HHS, which was planned in advance. At 7:46am, A Twitter user tagged a local news outlet in a tweet reading, “Hillsboro High School is standing with Forest Grove High School and will also be walking out today.” Among the signs on display was a simple-yet-forceful demand: “Give us Chicano Studies.”

Cientos de jóvenes tomaron parte en la huelga de HHS, que se había planeado con antelación. A las 7:46am un usuario de Twitter etiquetó a un medio local de comunicación con un tweet que decía: “Hillboro High School se alza con Forest Grove High School y también participará en la huelga de hoy”. Entre las pancartas que se exhibieron había una exigencia sencilla pero poderosa: “Dennos Estudios Chicanos”.

Liberty High School

Latinx youth at LHS coordinated their actions with students at Forest Grove so that the walkouts would take place simultaneously. “LHS walkout!! 9:49” a student tweeted at 8:00am, adding the hashtag #Districtwalkout. After the rally a group of LHS students traveled to join their peers at the Forest Grove School District offices, bringing with them a large banner reading “Liberty Supports Forest Grove HS.”

La juventud Latinx de LHS coordinó sus acciones con las de estudiantes de Forest Grove par que las huelgas tuvieran lugar de manera simultánea. “Huelga en LHS!! 9:49” twitteó un estudiante a las 8:00am, añadiendo la etiqueta #Districtwalkout. Después de la manifestación, un grupo de estudiantes de LHS se trasladó para unirse a sus compañeros y compañeras en las oficinas del Distrito Escolar de Forest Grove, llevando consigo una gran pancarta que decía “Liberty apoya a Forest Grove HS”.

McMinnville High School

MHS students were among those moved to hold a solidarity action on the day after the walkouts. One user commented on social media: “I feel like regardless of political beliefs that most students at Mac High can at least support what #StandUpFG represents.”

Los y las estudiantes de MHS se encontraban entre los que se unieron a una acción solidaria el día después de la huelga. Un usuario comentó en redes sociales: “ Siento que, sin importar las creencias políticas, la mayoría de los estudiantes de Mac High pueden al menos apoyar lo que representa  #StandUpFG”.

Newberg High School

A group of Latinx students carried Mexican flags as they walked through the parking lot of NHS. Today, these actions would have been a violation of the Newberg School District’s 2021 ban on “political symbols” which includes all flags except those of the United States and the State of Oregon. This hateful policy was created specifically to target the visibility of Black Lives Matter and pride flags on school grounds.

Un grupo de estudiantes Latinx llevó banderas mexicanas mientras caminaba por el parqueo de NHS. Hoy, estas acciones hubieran violado la prohibición sobre “símbolos políticos” que pasó el Distrito Escolar de Newberg en 2021, que incluye cualquier bandera que no sea la de Estados Unidos y la del Estado de Oregón. Esta política racista se creó específicamente para atacar la visibilidad de banderas de Black Lives Matter y del orgullo en el recinto escolar.

Oregon State University

Students from OSU’s M.E.Ch.A. (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán) chapter posted a picture from the night before the walkouts in which they were preparing signs and posters. It is unclear whether these materials made their way to Forest Grove or were used for a local protest.

Portland Community College, Rock Creek

PCC students held a teach-in in Building 5 of the Rock Creek campus where they gave speeches reflecting on their own experiences of racism in education. Two years later, students who participated in #StandUpFG would lead the movement for Ethnic Studies at PCC.

Los estudiantes de PCC celebraron un acto de enseñanza en el Edificio 5 del campus de Rock Creek, donde ofrecieron discursos reflexionando sobre sus propias experiencias con el racismo en la educación. Sunset High School

Youth at Sunset High School created and installed a large banner reading “Build Communities, Not Walls,” on a hallway wall inside of the school. Students wrote statements of solidarity and support on the banner, which also featured handprints from contributors.

La juventud de Sunset High School produjo e instaló una gran pancarta con el lema “Construyamos Comunidades, No Muros” en un pasillo del interior del colegio. Tigard High School

The walkout at THS was interrupted by a downpour of rain, leading youth to move from the parking lot to an indoor commons area. There students delivered impromptu speeches in solidarity with #StandUpFG.

Tualatin High School

TuHS students gathered at North Hall at 1:30pm to begin their walkout in solidarity with #StandUpFG. Photos from social media show strong support from youth despite the heavy rain. “TuHS stands with Forest Grove,” one student tweeted, “Through thick and thin and through the rain.”

Westview High School

The walkout at Westview High School took place shortly before 2pm. Outside of the school, a group of students engaged in a conversation with the school’s principal, Jon Franco, where he expressed his amazement at the students’ actions. “We don’t want you to be amazed by us,” one student responded, “we want you to change conversations.”

La huelga en Westview High School tuvo lugar poco después de las 2pm. Fuera del colegio, un grupo de estudiantes conversó con Jon Franco, el director de la escuela, expresando su desconcierto ante las acciones del estudiantado. “No queremos desconcertarlo”, respondió un estudiante, “queremos que cambie la conversación”.

Woodburn High School

40 miles away from Forest Grove, approximately 100 students at Woodburn High School walked out of their classrooms on May 25, six days after the original walkout. Among their demands was the creation of Ethnic Studies courses.
