In March of 2016, a Latinx male student opened the door to Ms. Harville’s 9th grade English class and called her the n-word. The next day, a petition circulated on social media that called on the Forest Grove High School community to stand up to racism and intolerance. The petition closed by asking readers to “spread the message of support and acceptance by using the hashtag #standupfg” on social media.”

The incident involving Ms. Harville set into motion a series of events that would culminate in thousands of students walking out of their classroom in support of Latinx students at FGHS. But as students, both past and present, were quick to point out on social media, what happened to Ms. Harville was not an isolated incident. Instead, they argued, it was a symptom of deeper and systemic issues of race and inequality that had been festering for generations.
