The Path | El Camino
Even as the events of the day were still unfolding, the students participating in walkouts and solidarity actions in support of #StandUpFG understood that their actions were historic. On social media, youth described their actions as history in the making; literally altering the course of history in Forest Grove and beyond. As one twitter user wrote, “today schools all over Oregon came together making history, something that’ll be unforgettable.”
Aún cuando todavía se estaban desarrollando los acontecimientos del día, estudiantes que participaron en los paros y los actos solidarios en apoyo de #StandUpFG sabían que era un acto histórico. Otras articulaban una conexión distinta con la historia, donde sus acciones no solo “hacían historia” sino también tomaban forma y se informaban del pasado. Para éstas, los paros de Forest Grove y el Valle de Willamette seguían el camino abierto por la juventud Negra y de color que se había alzado de forma similar (y en muchos casos, participado en paros) en protesta contra las injusticias raciales en la educación y un currículum que no tenía ninguna relación con sus vidas.
Others articulated a different connection to history, one that saw their actions not only as “making history,” but also as being shaped and informed by the past. For them, the walkouts taking place in Forest Grove and across the Willamette Valley followed a path that had been forged by Black and Brown youth who had similarly stood up, and in many cases, walked out, to protest racial injustice in education and a curriculum that had no meaningful connection to their lives.

These youth saw themselves as part of a long legacy of Ethnic Studies activism that stretches back to the late 1960s, particularly the 1968 walkouts in East Los Angeles high schools, a pivotal moment in the early history of the Chicano Movement.
