I was a student at a neighboring high school during the #StandUpFG. This event was very significant in my life. It was the first time that it was made really clear to me the value that the color of my skin brings. This walkout was a time that my people and I were being devalued and not welcomed. The amount of pride that was evident that day has had such an impact on me and is evident in my life ever since. That day showed me the color of my skin and my roots are a part of my identity and make me who I am and just because it isn’t the same as someone else’s doesn’t make it any less worthy.
Era estudiante en una escuela cercana durante #StandUpFG. Ese acontencimiento fue muy significativo en mi vida. Fue la primera vez que vi muy claro el valor que conlleva el color de mi piel. El paro fue un momento en que mi gente y yo estábamos siendo devaluados y no bienvenidos. El orgullo que se mostró en ese día ha tenido un gran impacto en mí y es evidente en mi vida desde entonces. Ese día me mostró que el color de mi piel y mis raíces son parte de mi identidad y me hacen quién soy, y sólo porque no es igual a la de otra persona no es menos valiosa.Vanessa Vigil
Me llamo Vanessa Vigil. Soy una artista independiente a quien le encanta crear y compartir mi trabajo. Me inspiro en el arte popular mexicano tradicional y en mi cultura mexicano-estadounidense. Tres características que describen mi trabajo: líneas brillantes, simbólicas, y detalladas. Cuando observes mi trabajo artístico verás una variedad de colores que hacen que toda mi obra sea vívida. Uso el simbolismo para mostrar orgullo y reconocimiento por mi cultura y también para contar una historia personal de manera visual. Las líneas siempre han sido parte de mi trabajo y juegan un papel importante en el tiempo que me tomo para completarlo. Expreso visualmente el aprecio por mi cultura usando múltiples medios, incluidas la pintura, el grabado, y la ilustración digital.
My name is Vanessa Vigil. I’m a freelance artist, who loves creating and sharing my art. I gain inspiration from traditional Mexican folk art and my Mexican-American culture. Three characteristics that describe my art: bright, symbolic and detailed line work. When observing my art you will see a variety of colors that makes all my work vivid. I use symbolism to show pride and recognition for my culture and as well to visually tell a personal story. Line work has always been a part of my craft and plays a big role in the time I take on my work. I visually express the appreciation behind my culture using multiple mediums including: painting, printmaking, and digital illustration.
